A New Home for Ewe Baba Dolls

A personal letter from the artist

Over the years, I’ve sent handmade dolls to homes all around the world. From the United States and the United Kingdom to Canada and Germany (should I be proud… or just a little jealous?), these soft souls have found their way into people’s lives, each one carrying a story.

You told me what you needed. Sometimes it was a doll to hold during hard nights. Sometimes it was a gift for your child, your parent, or even yourself. There were stories of dolls helping ease separation anxiety, becoming quiet companions in hospice care, reconnecting someone to the warmth of their childhood, or serving as cherished pieces for collectors who appreciate beauty and craftsmanship. I listened to all of it- your dreams, your fears, your hopes, and I poured them into fabric and thread.

Each doll I made until now was a custom creation, built from your vision. And yes, I still make custom life-size dolls and love the intimacy of working one-on-one with people who have something special in mind.

At the same time, I found myself quietly drawn to creating dolls from my own imagination. Between commissions, I would catch myself sketching characters just for me, sometimes inspired by old paintings I love, sometimes by poetry or feelings I couldn’t quite put into words, or even by a beautiful piece of fabric I didn’t want to let go of. These dolls weren’t made for anyone in particular- they simply wanted to exist.

My notebook filled up slowly with ideas that didn’t come from requests, but from somewhere inside me. These dolls felt like they had their own presence, as if they were gently waiting for their turn to be made. So I started bringing them to life, one by one.

They come from my imagination, but I believe they’ll find someone who feels connected to them, just like the custom dolls have found their people.

This new chapter of Ewe Baba is still rooted in everything I care about: beauty, softness, storytelling, and emotional connection. Whether a doll is born from your idea or from one of my sketches, I hope it brings something warm and lasting into your world.

Thank you for letting me into your lives and for letting my dolls into your homes.

With care,
Ivana
